We are seeking to recruit enthusiastic and engaging Civil Engineering Undergraduate Placement.

The McLaughlin and Harvey Undergraduate programme will give you the opportunity to train as a Civil Engineer. From day one, our programme is designed to give you the best mentored, relevant and practical experience, tailored to suit your chosen career. We offer a paid, 12-month Placement with the opportunity to progress onto the graduate scheme following your graduation. Training will include time in relevant departments offering a broader understanding of how the business operates by getting involved in interesting and challenging work.

Recent projects include; Teesport Reconstruction Berth 1, Liverpool 2 Container Terminal, Hawick Flood Protection Scheme, Royal Wharf London, Peterhead Harbour, Stonehaven Flood Alleviation Scheme, Broughty Ferry Flood Protection Scheme, BAE Barrow, Heysham Brexit Facility and Bushmills Maturation Facility.

Responsibilities

Your main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure all site activities are undertaken in compliance with McLaughlin and Harvey SHEQ policies and procedures
  • Assist with and ensure setting out is done on site to the contract drawings.
  • Produce weekly / monthly progress reports as appropriate
  • Communicate programme risks to the management team and maintain records for contractual correspondence
  • Ensure accurate daily records including site diary are maintained and communicated for labour, material and plant, including subcontractors
  • Communicate McLaughlin and Harvey policies and procedures to subcontractors and ensure these are being observed
  • Ensure the management team are kept appraised of variations to the works and any matter likely to have commercial or contractual implications

Our Civil Engineering Placement Programme focuses on developing your skills both professionally and interpersonally. The one-year programme is structured, and you will experience working with other departments to broaden your knowledge of how the business operates.

How will I spend an average working week?

You’ll be putting into practice what you’ve learned by working with experienced colleagues on a range of high-profile projects.

You will get responsibility from an early stage in your career and will play a key role in helping deliver projects on time and under budget. You will also have opportunities to work on our high-profile projects.

Essential experience

  • Studying a degree relevant to Civil Engineering
  • Open to living away from home
  • Excellent communication & negotiation skills
  • High levels of organisational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent numerical, IT and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in fast moving Environment
  • Ability to work on initiative with minimum supervision

Desirable

  • Hold a full UK driving license
  • A valid CSCS card
