The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of progressive industrial placements, which will commence from July 2022 until July 2023.

We are hiring for an Operational Meteorological Technician Industrial Placement to be based in Exeter with hybrid working with a salary of £17,900 plus amazing benefits.

Our Operational Meteorological Technicians are key-workers and this may include working a variety of shifts with the pattern dependant on the customer and location. During your initial induction and training you will work Monday to Friday whilst studying with the People Development Team. On moving to an operational role, you may begin to work different shift patterns. Unsocial hours worked will qualify for an unsocial hours allowance.

This Industrial Placement is a steppingstone to returning to the Met Office on completion of your degree to progress onto becoming a fully qualified Operational Meteorologist.

Job Purpose

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month industrial placement, which will give you an opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside diverse and highly skilled experts in their field, supporting you to achieve key deliverables and develop your own skills and knowledge. The placement will be fully integrated with your university requirements to ensure you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placements all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after your degree.

This opportunity is a way of learning more about the Met Office, finding out about the products & services we provide to a wide range of customers and what we do as an organisation.  You will get the chance to contribute operationally with the basic training provided to Op Met Technicians and an Aeronautical Meteorological Observing qualification.  You will work with fully qualified Operational Meteorologists and Operational Meteorological Technicians who are further on in the process of their meteorological training.

Your initial Operational Meteorological Technician training in September with our globally recognised People Development Team will be a mix of virtual and face-to-face learning and will prepare you for your operational role at one of our sites. You’ll get a unique insight into how weather impacts customer operations with training to support you in your day-to-day work (e.g. observations, basic meteorology, media script writing). You’ll be learning on the job and dependent on satisfactory performance and behaviour, we are able to offer a conditional place on successful completion of degree, to train as an Operational Meteorologist, gaining your AMF qualification credited by the World Meteorological Organisation.

Working at our defence stations or civil operations centres across the UK and abroad, you’ll spend approximately 8 months as an Operational Meteorological Technician using our state-of-the-art technology and weather information learning to complete a variety of tasks. This might include:

  • Viewing and interpreting weather observations and model data
  • Translating meteorological products and services for our diverse customers (e.g. public weather service and Ministry of Defence)
  • Real-time data modelling and analysis – providing a constant weather watch or radiosonde launches
  • Handling customer calls on our Weather Desk and our Met Office Twitter feed
  • Providing administration support to your team

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  • Be working towards a degree in meteorology, a physical science, mathematics or engineering.
  • A-level mathematics or AS physics or the direct equivalent (e.g. IB, Scottish Highers). 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships.
  • Demonstrate your interest in the weather and how it impacts on you.
  • Demonstrate a pro-active approach to balancing demands on your time.
