Life in Research Development Quality (RDQ)

As an Intern at Mondelēz International, you will be responsible and accountable for your project(s). During the placement you will be expected to plan and execute tests of various scale (e.g. benchtop and pilot plant) as appropriate for your project, as well as to coordinate informal sensory assessment. Key deliverables would be to produce technical reports/presentations and periodically communicate your key findings to stakeholders. You will also have the opportunity to interact with the wider RDQ Community, other business functions and external suppliers. In addition to this you may also be expected to support other ongoing project activities in and outside of your immediate team. For some roles, occasional travel within the UK, or international, may be required. 

We have 2 RDQI centres supporting Mondelēz International research and innovation in the UK, Bournville and Reading. This role is based in Reading. 

Reading Science Centre 

Reading Science Centre is the home of the Mondelez Global Science Centre and wholly owned subsidiary, Reading Scientific Services Limited (RSSL).  RSSL provide external support to food, healthcare and pharmaceutical customers. 

Ingredient Research (IR)

The Ingredient Research group are a global team dedicated to establishing fundamental scientific understanding and discovering technologies that will enable breakthrough competitive and sustainable advantage for our categories and overall business. Optimising the way we deliver ingredients, flavour, and texture and well-being credentials is a critical aspect to delighting and bringing joy to our consumers, and ensuring the growth of our company. 

Each year we welcome interns into our Flavour and Materials Science teams within Ingredient Research, to work with our technical experts to develop technologies that enable innovation across Mondelez’s portfolio of snack products.  Part of your role will be to prepare lab scale samples for sensory and analytical assessment. In the Flavour team, you will work with experts in flavour chemistry to develop your own understanding of flavour science, analysis and perception, using prototypes and model systems to demonstrate the impact of different ingredients and flavour combinations on the flavour profile of a product.  In the Materials Science team, you will apply your knowledge of physics and chemistry to help develop technologies to improve the nutritional profile of our products, in line with our well-being strategy. 

Candidate requirements 

Studying towards a degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Engineering or other scientific discipline (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Food & Nutrition, Physical Sciences, Materials Science, Physics) 

  • Studying towards a science related degree (detailed above)  
  • 2:1 degree - predicted end result (or equivalent) 
  • Self-driven and motivated 
  • Naturally inquisitive and passionate about technical excellence  
  • Can work with a level of autonomy, as well as within a team 
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, communication and presentation abilities  
  • Pro-active, highly motivated, ready to take on new responsibilities and build strong relationships  
  • Experience of planning experiments or trials 
  • Able to travel (if required) 
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office
