We have an exciting opportunity for you to kickstart your engineering career involving development projects in automotive, motorsport and low-carbon vehicle breakthrough technologies. We are looking for a Graduate Engineer who is passionate about thermal engineering, manufacturing, engineering design and innovation to join our project team based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire on a full-time basis.

Purpose of the Role

To support the Project Engineers with the design and implementation of engineering projects and tasks within the Project team, delivering the required project outputs and/or deliverables to the required specification, timings, and quality, whilst at all times working in accordance with Zircotec’s H&S requirements.

Current projects at Zircotec that the Graduate Engineer may be involved in include the development of bespoke thermal barrier coatings and external heat shielding solutions used from the next generation of low carbon combustion engines within automotive, motorsport, heavy duty vehicles, and others.

Responsibilities

  • To support and/or carry out project tasks and priorities under the supervision of the Project Manager or Project Engineer.
  • To support the Project Engineer(s) with developing novel processes and materials to meet the specification of the application.
  • To produce 2D and 3D CAD designs of fixtures, tooling and supporting components for processes.
  • Bill of Materials generation and the relevant revision update management according to the project design specification.
  • To liaise with suppliers and subcontractors contributing to the project deliverables.
  • To assist with technical specifications for procuring equipment and materials required for associated projects or the Project department.
  • To support with the assembly and testing of bespoke project machinery, parts and tooling, as well as bought in products or parts for correct functionality and/or dimensional accuracy.
  • To support the Production and Maintenance departments with regards to production issues, automation, and fixture creation.
  • To provide technical support to the Sales team with technical input, and design solutions and costings under the supervision of the Project Manager or Project Engineer.
  • To report on progress of ongoing tasks to the Project Manager.
  • To contribute to Zircotec’s programme of continuous improvement.
  • To support the Project Engineer(s) with the integration of projects into the production environment.

Progression

  • Graduate Engineers will initially be responsible for single tasks and project deliverables, all under the supervision of the Project Manager or Project Engineer.
  • Development through on the role training will be provided including specialist technical training on thermal spray technology, automation, and coatings & materials science. On-the-job experience under supervision and formal training as per the Project team’s training matrix will progress the Graduate Engineer to be able to take ownership and responsibility for micro to small size projects.
  • Upon successful completion of small projects over an agreed minimum period and with agreement from the Directors, the Graduate Engineer can progress to the position of Project Engineer and be able to manage medium to large projects, still under the supervision of the Project Manager.

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

  • BEng, BSc, or higher qualification in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or similar
  • Completion of internships/placements and/or experience within an IMechE Formula Student team or similar extra-curricular activities are beneficial.
  • Some experience in using 3D CAD packages and generating 2D drawings for the purpose of manufacture, Solidworks preferred but not essential.
  • An understanding in rapid prototyping / R&D methods within a Scientific/Engineering environment.
  • An understanding of traditional manufacturing methods such as sheet metal fabrication and machining.
  • Proactive in initiating action when encountering challenges.
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Confidence to communicate both within the team and externally with clients and stakeholders on a technical level.
  • Able to multitask across various tasks adhering to their respective priority requirements.
