Graduate Environmental Scientist Reading 2022

We are looking to recruit a graduate environmental specialist to join our growing environmental team supporting nuclear projects in the UK. We are looking for someone with an environmental and sustainability background who wants to learn on the job and be involved in major infrastructure projects.

As a Graduate environmental specialist, you will be supporting other senior team members in the review of design documents and environmental assessments and helping them coordinate specialist teams where required. Often the challenges posed by the types of projects we are involved in are varied and in many cases are novel, meaning that the scope of work continually changes but is incredibly interesting and rewarding.

Role description

Provide environmental support to senior staff on the following (specialist teams are tasked with delivering the each of the aspects listed):

• Best Available Techniques
• Waste
• Radiological risk assessment
• Sustainability Appraisal
• Energy Resource Statement (energy & carbon)
• DREAM assessment (MOD equivalent of BREEAM)
• CIRAM (Climate Impact Risk Assessment)
• Human Factors

To apply for this scheme, you will have less than 12 months experience and have a degree or are expected to achieve one of the following degree disciplines:

• Engineering or Environmental related degree
• Radwaste Management or Radiological Protection
• Sustainability

In your application you should be able to demonstrate your interest through relevant experience, such as studying relevant modules, or previous work experience.

Projects are often at the concept design stage and they themselves are continually changing in terms of scope, requirements, deliverables, and arrangements. Therefore, there is often a lack of data and an establish framework within to work.

Given the above, any suitable candidate would have to demonstrate the following:

• Be approachable with good communication skills and able to work within a team
• Have a varied environmental/engineering background
• Show good initiative to be able to engage with a task and adapt approaches when required
• Have an appreciation of engineering and environmental/ sustainability aspects, but not necessarily a specialist in any given aspect (soft and transferrable skills are of high importance).
