Do you like to have your finger on the pulse? Good with data and reporting? We have an opportunity to join our Performance team in IT and Digital, who monitor progress against our targets, identify issues and track delivery of value. You would be working closely with project teams delivering digital tech within National Grid to help us achieve our ambition to support the clean energy transition.

This position gives you the opportunity to participate in our IT Graduate Development Programme, an 18-month experience consisting of three 6-month placements in varying IT departments.  Your first placement will be in the role outlined below and you will return to this role following two broadening 6-month rotations where your knowledge of IT at National Grid will be expanded.

The purpose of this role is to provide updates on progress, capture progress against KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators), and ensure standards and timelines are met. The information is then collated, reported and insights provided to the Chief Information Officer and Electricity System Operator Technology leadership team. The KPI’s and reporting suites need to focus on the customer and outcomes of delivery. You will study inputs such as plans, risks and issues and help to shape these into ‘what and why’ impact statements in collaboration of the Programme managers. The role will cover a variety of activities, such as portfolio meetings, KPI tracking, and creating reports for the senior leadership team.

What you'll need

As one of our Graduates, you’ll have the chance to start putting your studies into practice. You’ll need to be curious and proactive. Ask questions. Be interested. Along with a 2.1 Degree classification in one of the following disciplines:

  • Maths
  • Computing
  • Statistics
  • Strategy

You will only be able to apply for one role per programme (i.e. one graduate role) for this campaign. Please ensure you apply to your most preferred role. Those who apply for more than one, will be withdrawn and asked to confirm their preference.

Key tasks and areas of work

As a member of the Performance team, you will support the delivery of an agreed menu of Portfolio and Performance material, tracking and reporting on progress to support the customer-focused outcomes and achievements within the delivery teams. You may be involved in any of these activities:

  • Set up and monitoring of dedicated resources and repositories, such as SharePoint, Resource tracker, Key Performance Indicator trackers, PowerBI, and any other data bases that the Leadership team utilises to support delivery
  • Working with the Performance and Portfolios Leads and Programme Management team to set up and utilise comms channels and stakeholder lists, to support delivery of key communications about the portfolio performance and delivery progress against targets.
  • Support a number of weekly workshop sessions to ensure progress and insights are discussed and updates tracked.
  • Preparation of performance packs, including liaising with contributors to ensure that content is on time and ready for review in a timely fashion
  • Ownership of action logs, following up with action owners to ensure progress is maintained and escalating to where necessary
  • Support the creation of reporting tools and material.

As a first step to your career in the energy industry, our Graduate Programmes are like no other. You’ll gain an insight into how we work at National Grid, and understanding of what a career with us can offer, and receive some great rewards and benefits:

  • Starting salary of £29,254 (Bachelors) / £30,318 (Masters)

About us

National Grid touches the lives of almost everyone in the UK, with an energy network that stretches across the Atlantic. We’re an international team, and our work underpins the lives of millions of people. Feet forwards, head up, and eyes bright, we’re working hard to create value for people today – and shape the future of energy tomorrow.

In the UK, we don’t generate or sell energy – we join the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning, to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity network puts power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.

The world of energy is changing beyond recognition. Working at National Grid, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in the UK – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.
