Bell Labs, Augmented Human Sensing Team

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

As part of the Data and Devices Group, the Cambridge Sensing and Computing Devices Team develops innovative wearables, distributed sensors, and analog computation devices that can continuously and non-invasively sense and interpret the physical world. We emphasize individual creativity and value both fundamental research contributions and advances that could potentially expand Nokia’s sensing and automation product offerings.

Education Recommendations

Currently a candidate for bachelor’s, master's, or PhD degree or diploma in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related field with an accredited school in US.

Opportunities for learning and contributing

You will have the opportunity to take on cutting-edge research projects with our highly collaborative cross-disciplinary team. Depending on your interests, in this internship you will;

  • Have the opportunity to file patents and submit your work to academic conferences/journals
  • Design, implement, and test novel oscillator-based Ising computation hardware as a new method for solving hard optimization problems. Research can include both hardware design and algorithmic mapping of real-world problems to hardware. 
  • Develop AI and signal processing solutions for Bell Lab’s custom wearable multimodal sensor platform. Explore applications leveraging continuous sensing of internal body sounds, such as continual stress monitoring, dietary monitoring, and early illness detection.

About you

You have:

  • Willingness to contribute with creative, out-of-the-box solutions, to problems arising in a dynamic environment

It would be nice if you:

  • Are enrolled in a PhD program 
  • Have experience in data analytics and/or time-series AI techniques
  • Have hardware prototyping experience, including circuit design and debugging
  • Have background in Ising optimization problems
