The Business Leadership Graduate Scheme prepares you to become the future leaders of the Energy Industry. It’s a great way for you to experience a variation of business areas while getting a thorough overview of what we do and what our business is all about.
A business like ours has many opportunities to gain valuable experience. This scheme is designed to develop your skills through four placements around the business over the course of a two-year programme. We’ll choose your first placement based upon your strengths from the application process. This will also give you the chance to build a strong network within the company.
You’ll choose your second, third and fourth placement yourself with the support of a mentor and the Graduate Development team. We’ll encourage you to take up placements within our business which cover Commercial, Business Partnering, Customer Services, and Strategy to give you a great foundation to your career.
Commercial and Marketing
Both acquisition and retention are crucial areas for us in order to deepen and lengthen our relationship with our customers and to create value. This means that within our commercial and marketing business area you could get involved in placements where you’re managing pricing decisions, working on brand or credit risk strategy, designing and delivering new products, or delivering a brand campaign. You could also find yourself working with external partners to create new sales channels, or optimising our vulnerable customer strategy: one recent graduate placement took a lead role in opening an additional 12 npower Fuel Banks across the country, working with the Trussell Trust and mirroring their Food Bank initiative, promoting our achievements with both media and stakeholders.
You could take on a business partnering placement within a number of areas of the business such as Finance, HR, Marketing, or Sales. As a partner to a Senior Management team your role will be to influence and challenge the decision making process and find ways of creating value for our organisation. Your agenda will depend upon which business function you choose, for example, an HR Partner will influence and challenge on the people agenda whilst a finance partner will be focused on creating commercial opportunities. Whichever area you choose one thing is guaranteed - you will take your influencing skills to the next level.
Customer services is a major part of the npower business. We serve 5.4 million residential and business customers across the UK, and being able to provide good customer service is crucial for success. You’ll complete your customer services placement either as a first or second placement and there’s a number of great opportunities within this area. You might find yourself managing a team of telesales agents in our Leeds office, or contributing to our new ways of working project in our call centre in Sunderland. Wherever your placement takes you, we can guarantee that you’ll get an invaluable insight into the heart of our business which is relevant to everything else that you do and additionally, you’ll get to make a real difference to our people and our customers.
Getting a strategic understanding of our business and working in a strategic capacity will allow you to make a significant contribution to our people, our customers and to our profitability. This placement will be less defined because we want you to identify opportunities to create and implement a positive change within our business. So you’ll need to draw on all of your experience from your previous placements to:
- Identify an opportunity to improve what we do
- Influence senior managers to make the change happen
- Implement your initiatives and project manage the delivery
- Managing a wide range of business stakeholders
- Evaluate your success and use it to further your career.
