Controls Engineering focuses on the measurement and control of wider engineering systems. The huge variety of different engineering systems used globally means a career in this field can give you almost limitless opportunities and challenges. Our internship programme is designed to give you both the insight and experience you need to take your first steps towards that career – not least because you’ll learn from some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in the field. Working on live projects, over your 12 months you’ll work in our Submarines division, problem-solving and designing integrated systems for optimal effectiveness. As you develop, the challenges will increase in complexity and responsibility, combining on-the-job learning with training modules and project work.

If you are a student member of an institute, experience gained on your internship can be used to credit some of your learning towards your graduate programme and chartership status, should you choose to join.
What you’ll do
As an intern, you’ll be assigned an engineer as your line manager, so you’ll be learning directly from a skilled professional. And the projects you do will be in support of a real business need, with a direct link to our products and customers. It makes for a fantastic opportunity to share your ideas and really make a difference. Not only will you receive on the job training, you’ll also get exposure to project management and develop a host of transferable skills. Your day to day tasks will vary, and you’ll receive support from different people within the business, all of whom will be committed to helping you to deliver your best.
What you’ll need
You’ll be on track to achieve a 2:1 bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, such as Electronics, Electrical, Software or Computer/Control Systems Engineering, or Computer Science. Excellent communication skills, plenty of initiative and an inquisitive, resourceful approach.
Due to the nature of our work, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK and if you have spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling, working, living), we might not be able to employ you. This role is subject to Full UK Security Check Clearance issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting.
