Job Description

Operations are rarely as complex as those you’ll find at Rolls-Royce. Keeping everything running smoothly right across our manufacturing, assembly and repair facilities is a major undertaking – as is managing the external suppliers who make around 70 per cent of our components. On our Operations Management Graduate Development Programme, you’ll have huge scope to contribute as you immerse yourself in real projects across the business.

The programme

You’ll get first-class training, mentoring and support, and you’ll also learn from some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in the field. Your first three placements – each lasting six months – will give you experience in areas like Purchasing, Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality/Improvement. And because you’ll spend time in a manufacturing environment, by the end of your 18 months you’ll have gained a solid understanding of the breadth of Operations. Your next challenge will be a 12-month leadership role where you’ll have the support you need to lead teams, develop others and grow your performance management skills. There’s a lot to take in, so you’ll be supported by a graduate development consultant and career coach – they’ll do all they can to ensure you get the most out of the programme.

What you’ll do

Your first 18 months will see you experience the functional breadth of Operations. Your responsibilities will include managing a portfolio of parts from suppliers to the customer and gaining a technical understanding through Manufacturing Engineering or Quality, while gaining experience on the shop floor in our manufacturing and/or assembly plants. Your placements will include learning about lean principles and processes, leading to completion of your own improvement project and gaining accreditation in Lean Six Sigma.

Then your 12-month supported leadership role will begin. Working in a manufacturing or assembly environment, you’ll build on what you’ve learned and discover how to lead a team to meet customer demands, all with a view to leaving the programme into an Operations Management role as a Production Leader - a challenging but rewarding role which will prepare you to be a future leader. As part of the programme and working in this area, you’ll likely be required to work shifts. Having your own shift to manage will enable you to display and grow your leadership skills and develop strong relationships with your team, all while benefiting from financial uplift.

What you’ll need

We’re looking for resilient graduates with strong leadership skills – so you’ll need to know how to earn trust, inspire respect and communicate well. In terms of qualifications, you should be on course to achieve at least a 2:1 degree, or a comparable qualification, in an engineering, science or numerate subject. Flexibility is important too. You’ll be expected to be geographically mobile as you could be based at any of our sites. We also want you to be innovative and resourceful: you’ll never be short of ideas about how we can continually improve.

What you’ll get

  • Competitive salary
  • The opportunity to join a professional institution
  • Bonus schemes
  • A competitive pension
  • Leisure facilities and numerous sports societies and social activities
