At Rolls-Royce, we pioneer the power that matters and within our Submarines division, that power has been propelling the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear submarines for over 50 years.
By joining our Submarines Engineering team for a summer internship, you could find yourself helping develop innovative solutions as part of the design and manufacture of the next generation of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plants, or supporting the plant through its life, keeping the nation’s nuclear submarine fleet at sea. Wherever you work, you’ll be part of the team providing propulsion to the United Kingdom’s nuclear deterrent and ensuring the safety of our ultimate customer, the Sailors of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service. Our Defence business is a truly unique place to work – and for you, joining our summer internship programme could be the first step on an incredible career path.
Our 10-week summer internship is designed to give you both insight and experience. Contributing to projects in our Submarines division, your role will involve problem solving and designing integrated systems for optimal effectiveness. While operating primarily out of our main site in Derby, you could also find yourself supporting the Astute and Dreadnought class build programmes at Barrow-in-Furness; conducting maintenance on the fleet at the Faslane or Devonport dockyards; or learning about the wider industry via our Civil Nuclear business. You’ll be learning from some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in the field and you can expect a blend of on-the-job learning, training and project work. And because you’ll be working in a real-world business context, you’ll have every chance to make an impact. You could even be invited to join our graduate programme – a fantastic start to a career with one of the world’s most prestigious global companies.
What you’ll need
You’ll be on track to achieve a 2:1 minimum bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, to include Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Maths, Chemistry or Physics. Just as importantly, you’ll have excellent communication skills and plenty of initiative. Inquisitive and resourceful, you’ll always be looking for new ways to make your mark. You should also be flexible in terms of where you’re based.
Due to the nature of our work, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK and if you have spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling, working, living), we might not be able to employ you. This role is subject to Full UK Security Check Clearance issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting.
