Job Summary

Schlumberger’s research laboratory in Cambridge is located two miles from the city centre, close to the majority of the physical science departments of Cambridge University.  The Laboratory is fortunate to host a number of interns; these young scientists make a valuable contribution to our research and it is our intention that they receive a superior training experience that increases their scientific and general professional skills.

We have three vacancies within the “Well Construction Fluids and Materials” group.  This research programme works on projects spanning a range of fields including soft matter, interfacial science and polymer materials chemistry.

The work will primarily be experimental and will involve application of a range of physico-chemical techniques, both standard and developmental, to study detailed behaviour of these substances under representative conditions of use.

The interns will work within a team of scientists as an integrated part of the team on ongoing research projects.  The position would be suitable for those interested in physical chemistry or chemical physics.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Planning and carrying out experimental work, ensuring that laboratories activities are keep within Health & Safety standards guidelines
  • Analysing and interpreting experimental dataset
  • Participating in regular meeting to discuss project progress
  • Writing technical reports and presenting to peers
  • Assist with the laboratory housekeeping

Qualification

Studying towards a Bachelors or Masters in physical chemistry, chemical physics or related field.

Competencies

Required skills:

  • Good communication skills
  • Good fundamental laboratory skills
  • Basic data analysis (e.g., Excel)
