The Role

The ASIC design team based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory has a world-class reputation for delivering advanced Integrated Circuit designs to implement the most challenging science applications.

From ‘big science’ facilities such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, to exploring the solar system with space probes such as Rosetta and Bepi Colombo, our microelectronics help make possible the scientific discoveries of tomorrow. Successful candidates will work as part of a team to develop new circuits for future projects.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervised design of transistor level electronic circuits using Cadence IC6 design tools
  • Schematic entry and simulation
  • The layout of circuits along with verification checks
  • Simulation of layouts including extracted parasitic elements
  • The presentation of design work for review by members of the ASIC Design Group

Requirements

Essential:

  • Are in full time education at university and returning to university ollowing the placement
  • The right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement which is 12 weeks
  • A knowledge and understanding of basic analogue circuit theory 
  • A knowledge and understanding of basic digital circuit theory 
  • Ability to apply basic electronics knowledge to more complex situations 

Desirable:

  • A basic knowledge and understanding of Verilog or VHDL 
  • A good general awareness of modern microelectronics technologies and practices 
  • Experience of using design software for Microelectronics (such as Cadence) 
  • Experience of transistor level design of analogue circuits (Labs/project)
