South Wales Police is excited to launch our 2022 Intern Programme; we are looking for people with diverse skills and experiences to join our successful team.

About the role

This is an excellent opportunity for applicants who are looking for a 12 month work placement to join a specialist department and gain work experience and training.

In joining #TeamSWP you will be joining a leading force and one where you will be able to contribute new ideas and work to make a difference in society.

South Wales Police particularly welcomes applicants from under-represented groups.

Are you interested in developing safety knowledge, working on safety related projects in policing and contributing to investigating incidents and assaults?

Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Services are seeking a Health and Safety Intern to provide a combination of business and analytical support based with the Health & Safety Team.

What you'll do

As well as the day to day issues and requests for advice, the Health and Safety Intern is individually assigned a piece of work that they will own and deliver in line with the service objectives.

Safety within the Police Service is wide ranging and varied. From the operational side of the business to buildings and people. There is scope for the H&S Intern to learn and develop within this unique public sector arena.  The intern will have an opportunity to be a part of key pieces of work, including Workforce Safety projects on assaults on officers and staff, electronic reporting system improvements, development of key performance safety data and organisational safety reviews.

Days are usually a combination of office work, meetings and visits to a variety of Police premises across South Wales. At the moment due to Covid 19 restrictions a combination of office work and working from home is essential and meetings are often ‘virtual’. Site visits are carried out at various SWP premises to ensure compliance with legislation. This is periodically reviewed in line with business and legal requirements. The H&S Intern will need to be flexible, able to work remotely from home and in a Covid Secure Office environment. We are still very much a team, however, Covid has seen us switch to on-line and telephone for get togethers!

SWP have 100 properties force wide, these range from multi million pound new build projects to properties that are shall we say more challenging! Both require equal attention as we strive to keep our staff safe in the workplace, whether it is in a 100 year old building or a multi-million pound building site. The role of the H&S Intern will include the monitoring of local annual plans with regard to inspection compliance and hazard registers. This may include keeping KPI spreadsheets up to date and preparing data for quarterly strategic boards. No two days are the same in an organisation of over 5,000 people and that is no doubt the best part of the job!

The programme commences September 2022 and in order to be eligible for the intern programme you will need to be studying for a degree and looking for a ‘sandwich placement’ or alternatively you will have graduated within 3 years. Please note that you cannot apply if you have already undertaken an internship with South Wales Police.
