Due to our size and diversity, we can offer you a structured yet challenging development programme where you'll have the support of the Graduate Programme Manager and a business mentor to assist you in reaching your full potential. The programme will support your career development into a permanent role with SSE that reflects your experience and passion.
What will I do on the programmes?
Depending on the programme you choose, you could be involved in a broad range of exciting projects across the UK and/or Ireland. All roles are likely to involve some travel to other sites to gain practical exposure to a wide range of business areas, therefore a full UK driving licence would be an advantage but is not essential.
Here's a flavour of some of the exciting initiatives you could be involved in, for each Division.
CUSTOMERS (Perth, Reading) - helping our customers to have efficient and sustainable energy solutions is at our core. Throughout your placements you'll work within our Smarter Metering Business Energy division, bringing new opportunities for businesses through utilising emerging technologies to support the ever-changing energy landscape. Innovation is giving businesses ways to more accurately record usage. Metering is crucial to get the balance right and help businesses stay in control of their energy usage. It’s also the key to unlocking benefits for SSE Business Energy customers.
RENEWABLES (Glasgow, Dublin) - we have huge growth ambitions to treble SSE's green energy output by 2030. We're already doing some great things - we own and operate the largest onshore wind energy fleet in the UK and Ireland, and we also operate a number offshore and flexible hydro plants. We're looking for a range of engineers to support us with projects across our renewables business, where you can truly make a difference and help us drive the transition to a low-carbon future.
TRANSMISSION (Perth, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness) – working as part of multi-disciplined engineering teams, we have a range of opportunities for engineering graduates to support projects across our Transmission business. We're at the forefront of some really high profile projects which are ensuring our network is structurally sound, operating safely and efficiently and providing sustainable and reliable energy to all. You could be working on projects similar to the development of the new Caithness-Moray electricity transmission line, the reinforcement of substations, and the development of subsea electricity links - connecting some of the remotes part of Scotland to the main Transmission system for the first time.
DISTRIBUTION (Reading, Portsmouth, Perth) - working as part of multi-disciplined engineering teams, we have a range of opportunities for engineering graduates to support projects across our Distribution business. You'll get to enjoy being at the forefront of some exciting projects where you'll be at the forefront of developing, improving and maintaining our network. You'll be involved in projects and activities that help us ensure our network is not only running effectively, but also is considering innovative new technologies and efficient ways of providing energy to all customers.
THERMAL ENERGY (Perth, Glasgow, Ferrybridge, Dublin) - Flexible and efficient thermal generation will play a critical role in the transition to a low-carbon economy, providing reliable capacity at scale in response to market changes and events. It's a great time to join one of our new graduate programmes, and learn about the importance of our multi-fuel plants. In line with SSE’s low-carbon vision, our £350m Keadby 2 project is set to be the cleanest and most efficient CCGT in Europe. We’re developing new energy-from-waste facilities, including the £325m Ferrybridge Multi-fuel 2, which will help divert millions of tonnes of waste from landfill.
ENTERPRISE DISTRIBUTED ENERGY (Reading, Glasgow) - we are delivering the next generation of sustainable energy infrastructure to businesses across the UK. We are a growing business and operate in some really exciting markets from EV to energy storage, from heating and cooling networks to water networks - our business is certainly diverse! You'll get a taste for these different parts of our business as you're involved in exciting design and assurance projects.
What do I need to join?
For these programmes, you'll ideally have a minimum of a 2:2 BEng in either Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Materials, Marine/Naval or Energy-related degree. For some roles within our Thermal business we will also accept a degree in a similar or related subject such as Chemical, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies, or Building Services Engineering degree. Additionally we are seeking a Quantity Surveyor to join our Distribution business!
We’d love you to have practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for engineering, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You’ll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges.
You should have an interest in the energy sector, and show alignment with SSE's core values. We also ask that you have a flexible approach to work locations and be genuinely committed to developing a career with us – as we are with you.
