Tidyco’s Rail Division plays a vital role in supporting the UK Rail Industry, working on both new build and maintenance projects for passenger and freight vehicles. We partner with train builders, operators, and owners, providing comprehensive "port to port" solutions for onboard train systems, including hydrostatic, coolant, fuel, water, and air systems. Our services range from full vehicle inspections to overhauls of complete equipment and single-part re-engineering. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate to join our Rail Division and contribute to a team with a turnover exceeding £5 million per annum. As a Graduate Project Engineer, you will interface with sales, project management and production, gaining valuable experience in the full project lifecycle.
You will contribute to the scoping of bids and tenders, ensuring customer requirements are met. This includes creating bills of materials, researching potential suppliers and products, and collaborating with the sales team to develop the technical aspects of bids.
Upon successful project award, you will play a crucial role in project development, refining bills of materials and technical specifications. You will translate these into clear documentation for our overhaul workshop and oversee prototype builds, troubleshooting any issues to ensure smooth transition to series production. This role provides excellent exposure to practical engineering challenges and solutions.
Responsibilities
- Tendering and Bidding: Develop an understanding of customer requirements and translate them into tender specifications and draft bills of materials. Learn to work with suppliers to identify suitable products. Contribute to the development of technical responses for tender submissions.
- Project Execution: Participate in project start-up activities, including developing specifications, criteria, and detailed bills of materials. Gain experience in developing overhaul procedures and overseeing prototype overhaul builds. Learn the process of handing over completed projects for series production.
- Technical Support: Provide initial engineering support for ongoing overhaul projects, gaining practical experience in problem-solving and technical troubleshooting.
- Data Management and Reporting: Contribute to the maintenance of bills of materials, part information, and accurate records. Learn to prepare internal and external reports and documentation, including HSE documentation and KPI reports.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Develop strong communication and collaboration skills by liaising between different departments within the company.
Skills
Essential
- Educational Background: Degree in Mechanical Engineering (preferred) or a related engineering discipline.
- Technical Skills: PC/IT literacy and experience with standard office programs (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to draft clear reports, emails, and other documentation.
- Personal Attributes: Strong team player with a willingness to learn and contribute. Ability to work to deadlines and manage time effectively. Reliable, honest, and trustworthy. Proactive and able to work on own initiative.
Desirable
- Knowledge of the Rail Industry (while not essential, a demonstrable interest in the rail sector would be advantageous).
- Familiarity with internet research and information gathering.
