Job overview

We know that engineering has a fundamental role to play in London’s future. Civil engineering touches everything that we do, creating new possibilities and propelling us into the future.

Our engineering projects keep millions of customers moving around London as efficiently as possible.

You’ll find solutions to challenging problems, driving the most recognised and innovative transport network in the world.

What will I be doing?

This one year, extraordinary development programme is packed with a variety of opportunities, designed to provide you with invaluable experience in your journey towards becoming a Chartered civil engineer. You will complete 2-4 placements in different teams.  By working on live projects you will gain a broad grounding of engineering and a good understanding of what drives our business and how we deliver.

You’ll be working alongside specialist engineers: getting the chance to contribute to major new infrastructure schemes, large renewal programmes and work within operational engineering teams and in more strategic roles. You can also expect to complete placements in teams such as infrastructure protection, highway design and scheme implementation, commercial management, project management and asset management.

The emphasis of both our placement and graduate scheme is on developing ‘world class’ civil engineers who seek to become the senior engineers and leaders of the future.

What do we look for?

Whether you are working on a brand new civil engineering structure or working to keep our existing assets in operation for the future, you will have an inquisitive mind and love providing innovative solutions to complex scenarios.

You’ll need to be in your penultimate year of a Batchelor or Masters degree in civil engineering to join us, but we don’t expect you to have experience of the rail or road industry. This is what we will teach you.

If you are excited by inspiring and influencing the future of London and are up for a challenge and thrive under pressure, then this is the career path for you.

Where can this career take me?

During this year long programme, you would gain meaningful and valuable work experience which will support you in your ongoing career journey towards becoming a fully-fledged Chartered or Incorporated civil engineer. At the end of your placement, you may have the opportunity to be considered for graduate position through our fast track process.

What training and support will you get?

You’ll be set clear objectives at the start of your placement and will complete mid placement and end of placement reviews with your placement manager. You will also have an independent sponsor for the period of placement to help ensure you benefit from a wider perspective of TfL Engineering.
