Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates (WJE) has a new position in our London office for an entry-level engineer to practice architectural and structural engineering.

With the support of our industry leading team members, you’ll apply your education as you develop your understanding of design, construction, evaluation, and repair of building structures and enclosures.

As an engineering associate at WJE, you’ll assist with all aspects of completion of larger projects and also manage small projects. You will be responsible for investigations, field testing, failure diagnosis, construction observations, and creation of client deliverables. You will also assume primary responsibility for key aspects of projects and complete assignments with limited oversight while developing a network of industry professionals and future clients to promote our brand and generate business.

What you'll do

  • Completing on-site investigations, condition assessments, and litigation support (at new and existing structures) to evaluate problematic conditions; including survey and documentation of distress, field testing, sampling, photographing, and sketching
  • Organizing field data to facilitate analysis and problem solving
  • Analyzing research and investigation data to develop alternate schemes for solving problems
  • Performing structural, hygrothermal, or other computational analysis to better understand structural behavior and develop repair or design solutions
  • Preparing draft investigation reports, repair sketches, repair drawings, tender documents, addenda, change orders, and other work product
  • Conducting on-site observations of work in progress and preparing site visit reports using various reporting formats
  • Participating in meetings with clients, contractors, consultants, and others as a representative of WJE

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in Architectural, Civil, or Structural Engineering, Master’s Degree preferred
  • Record of excellent academic performance
  • A passion and curiosity for investigating and solving problems in existing structures of all kinds
  • Ability and interest in performing work in the field and to travel outside the local area and abroad
  • Authorization to work and live in the UK
  • Ability to work at heights and safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts and other access equipment
  • Experience related to the evaluation and repair of existing structures or building enclosures is considered a plus
  • Drafting experience with AutoCAD a plus

Physical requirements

This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computer, printer, fax, copier, telephone, voice mail system, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

  • Ability to attend meetings at the various office, field, and construction sites
  • Ability to perform inspections of buildings and other structures, both visually and with instruments
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform work in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors
  • Ability to read construction drawings, diagrams, printed materials, and computer screens
  • Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to safely work at heights
  • Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipment
  • Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazards
  • Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations
  • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle
