"I am looking forward to continuing my development in both technical and business-focussed areas."
Tell us a bit about yourself, which university and degree discipline you studied. When did you join SSE?
I studied for 4 years at the University of Southampton and during that time that I completed a BSc in Physical Geography and Geology followed by a MSc in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing. It was while studying for my Master’s degree that I developed an interest in the Energy Sector and in particular, how IT supports operation in this area. I applied to the SSE Graduate IT Scheme and joined the company in September 2018.
Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role and what made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?
Sustainability and sustainable infrastructure interest me and so I considered the energy sector, the construction sector and the environmental sector. Ultimately, I was attracted to SSE because of their commitment to renewable energy and contributing to a low-carbon future. I applied for an IT based role in order to enhance my technical development skills and to better understand the role of IT within large organisations through shadowing experienced members of the business.
What are you enjoying in your role?
The SSE IT Graduate scheme offers its graduates a lot of flexibility in terms of the areas of business you are exposed to. During the scheme, we undertake several placements that span across a range of business areas, from technical support roles to project management. What I enjoy most is the opportunity to gain experience in many different areas of IT.
What are you most looking forward to?
I am looking forward to continuing my development in both technical and business-focussed areas. From a development perspective, I am looking forward to feedback from a virtual reality project I worked on and from a business perspective, I am looking forward to getting involved with cost management.
How did you find the recruitment process?
Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes (this could include seeking advice from Careers Service re eg. Ability tests, interview preparation), attend events and speak to representatives from firm etc.
