Graduate insight into securing a Training Contract with Allen & Overy - Top tips from Mateusz

Created on 5 Jun 2017

We caught up with Mateusz Maciejewski, who recently secured a training contract with Allen & Overy after attending Bright Network First Year Lawyers Top 100. Here, he shares some advice about the application process.

Why did you choose to be a trainee with Allen & Overy?

Allen & Overy always made a great effort whenever they came to our campus or I visited their offices. It seemed like they always went the extra mile in order to get the right people, and this really showed during my vac scheme. The people are what makes a law firm and the people at A&O seem to be right for me!

What was the toughest part of the application process? And your favourite part?

The assessment day was definitely the toughest. Having 30 minutes to read through a lengthy document, absorb the information and prepare a presentation for a partner was gruelling but very rewarding in the end.

Were you surprised by anything in the process?

I was surprised by just how much the graduate recruitment and partners want you to succeed and do well. It may not seem like it but they just want to push you to your limits to see you at your best.

Do you have any specific advice for your fellow Bright Network members?

Definitely don't be afraid to apply anywhere you want. If you do decide to apply, commit yourself and put your all into the application in order to make the best first impression.

What’s your lucky charm or pre-interview ritual?

I used to wake up really early (still making sure I got plenty of sleep) so that my morning interviews would feel like the middle of the day and I could be at the top of my game. Also, listening to some EDM while on the way to the interview is always good.
