Securing a place on the Post Office’s Graduate Management Programme - Top tips from Sandy

Created on 10 Aug 2017

LSE graduate Sandy caught up with us about securing a place on the Post Office’s Graduate Management Programme. Sandy talked us through why she chose the Post Office, the different stages of the application process and how Bright Network has helped!

What drew you to apply for the Post Office?

A friend recommended the graduate programme to me and, after looking into it, I really liked the idea of having a rotation of training through the different business areas. It didn’t seem like a mundane programme like others I’ve seen, and I like variety in my work so it seemed ideal. I also did some research into the business. I think there’s a stereotype associated with the Post Office that puts people off applying, but there are so many different arms to the business and it was a real learning curve for me.

What did the application process involve?

I completed an online application form on the Bright Network website and I was then invited to do a video interview. The interview was great - it allowed me enough time to get my point across and the questions were straightforward to understand.

I then had a telephone interview, which was relaxed and conversational, and was made fun by the interviewer. I also found it very convenient to have a telephone interview. I then attended the assessment centre, which was a perfect opportunity to find out if the Post Office was a good fit for me. I was able to give input and ideas and very much felt that this was an open dialogue between the company and me.

How has Bright Network helped?

I was recommended by a friend to join Bright Network and initially I wasn’t putting job hunting as my priority - but I’m glad I found the graduate role opportunities on the website. The website has a really useful Calendar tool, so I could track when to send my applications. In addition, the content on interview preparation is also really useful. Bright Network is a great place for information, support, guidance and feedback and I felt very supported throughout my application to the Post Office.

And finally … what will you spend your first pay cheque on?

I really need a new phone! I’m also going to take my mum to the theatre to say thank you for all her support, and then I’m going to start saving for a house.
