Graduate insight into securing a vacation scheme with Herbert Smith Freehills

Created on 8 Jul 2016

Following her attendance at Bright Network Future Lawyers 2015, Sophie successfully secured a Vacation Scheme with Herbert Smith Freehills. I managed to catch up with Sophie to congratulate her on her success as well as asking her all about the application process and her personal experiences.

What did you enjoy most about Bright Network Future Lawyers 2015?

There was a vast number of representatives from the sponsoring firms and you really felt as if you had enough time to ask plenty of questions. It also enabled me to gain a fantastic insight into the varied cultures at different firms all in one place – it’s a unique opportunity and invaluable experience.

Why did you choose Herbert Smith Freehills?

I had a few encounters with Herbert Smith Freehills before I applied. I completed their first year scheme and had also been selected to be their On Campus Brand Ambassador. I outlined Herbert Smith Freehills as a favourite firm early on as they came across as extremely welcoming when I met them at their open day, at campus events and at Bright Network Future Lawyers 2015. It was the atmosphere and culture which incentivised me to apply.

Can you tell me a bit about the application process?

In the first part of the application process there was a question on ‘an achievement that you were proud of’ - I was definitely at an advantage being the On Campus Brand Ambassador. There was also a five hour assessment centre which involved a number of different exercises to complete.

What are your top tips for our members attending this year’s event?

  1. Be open minded when meeting the different firms as some preconceived impressions aren’t accurate. If you haven’t heard of a firm, don’t dismiss them – it’s possible they could be the best match for you.
  2. Talk to everyone and ensure you make the most out of the day.
  3. Prepare your questions in advance. It’s wise to come with some questions you can ask all the firms as well as some which are more firm specific.
