Securing a graduate role with IBM - Top tips from Shivani, a Financial Consultant

Created on 10 Apr 2018

Why did you choose this firm and this role?:

I chose IBM because it is a reputable and growing IT and Consulting company where I did my year placement. Therefore I have prior knowledge about the company and what its values are and I found that they suit the type of person I am.

Consultancy requires working with different companies and clients to suit their needs. I am particularly interested in banking and serving financial clients so this is the perfect role for me.

What was the toughest part of the application process? And your favourite part?:

The telephone interview was quite challenging as you cannot see the reactions of your interviewer and you may not be able to fully express yourself over the phone.

My favourite part was meeting my upcoming manager and team once I had secured the role.

Were you surprised by anything in the process?:

I was surprised about how relaxed the interviews after the telephone interview were. I think this is because I had almost secured the role and they were more interested in getting to know me as a person rather than interviewing me.

What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?:

1) Always challenge yourself to think outside the box.

2) Don't give up with interviews and assessment centres because they only give you more valuable experience for the future.

3) Be yourself in interviews and allow your personality to shine.

What was the toughest question you faced at interview?:

What is the one thing you don't like about teamwork?
