Isabelle's success story: Landing an internship at FactSet

Created on 20 Jun 2024

Isabelle is a Computer Science student from the University of Warwick. She secured a Client Solutions MESH Externship at FactSet through Bright Network.

First, we’d love for you to tell us a little bit about yourself.

“I’m a Computer Science student at the University of Warwick. I was motivated to go to university by my love of learning, reading and maths.

Growing up, I imagined myself working in the software engineering industry, but I’ve recently taken an interest in finance, because I enjoy the fast-paced nature of finance and the client connection it offers, as I’m a people person.

So far, I’ve worked part-time in a cinema and have also worked for an academic department at my university. Both roles have offered my transferrable skills in teamwork and communication and have helped shape my outgoing nature.”

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“As a computer science student with an interest in finance, FactSet as a fintech company, was the perfect mix of both areas.

The position itself offered a lot of mentorship and guidance, which reassured me as I’ve never been in a corporate fintech environment before. Overall, it was a perfect fit!”

What was your application journey like?

“I prepared by researching the company online, reading their website, LinkedIn and news articles.

I submitted an online form and then was asked to do a virtual interview.

This was a very relaxed two-way conversation with the interviewer, which helped me to relax and feel confident. My feedback was that I asked helpful questions and that I didn’t let my nervousness affect my composure.”

What have you learned from going through the process?

“I’ve learned that networking is your best asset in corporate environments and that it’s important to always ask lots of questions.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“I’m most proud of the confidence that I’ve developed."

"Being a Computer Science student, I was a little nervous about the transition going into the finance space, but by pushing myself to ask questions and learn as much as I could, I flourished and know more about fintech than I ever thought!”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“Research the company as much as possible before applying or before you start the programme.

The Financial Times and Barclays’ podcasts are really helpful.

And contact your university careers service – I wish I’d asked more questions!”
