Katherine gives her insights into securing a Graduate Scheme at Ofcom

Created on 5 Nov 2021

We recently caught up with Katherine about how she secured a graduate role with Ofcom, why the firm stood out to her and her top tips for Bright Network members looking to follow in her footsteps.

What stood out to you about the firm you secured your role with?

Ofcom stood out to me in more than one way. Firstly, the breadth of work that Ofcom is involved in attracted me to the company. They oversee the communication industry which spans from television and radio to postal and wireless services. Subsequently their work felt very important to me as I wished to have a role in which I could make a difference and work for the benefit of society. Additionally, Ofcom’s work on diversity within the communication industry is a topic which I feel passionate about. I spoke about this quite a lot throughout my application; this benefitted me as I was able to connect with their values. Finally, whilst speaking to many friendly employees I got an amazing sense of community and support within this organisation, and that is definitely something I wanted to be a part of.

How did Bright Network help you secure this role?

Bright network helped me in a few ways. Firstly, I undertook the Professional Services & Consulting stream of Internship Experience UK which gave me a lot of transferable skills such as analytical thinking, project organisation and creating solutions. As well as this the internship experience was a great place to network and to assume a professional persona which I think is helpful when speaking to new people, especially in interview settings.

As well as this I practised psychometric tests on Bright Network Academy which helped me to prepare for the real thing as this is a key part to the application process on most graduate schemes.

What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?

  1. Be confident - even if you're nervous you can redirect that energy and use it to your advantage.
  2. Be friendly - you want to be someone the employers can see themselves working with.
  3. Don't doubt yourself, you've got this!
