Securing a graduate role with Deloitte - Top tips from Katie, a Tax Consultant

Created on 19 Oct 2017

We caught up with Bright Network member Katie at the Bright Network Festival, where she had time to tell us about her new role as a Tax Consultant at Deloitte, which she heard about on the Bright Network website and starts in September 2018. She came to collect a bottle of Champagne as a well done from us. We give every member who secures a role through us a complementary bottle of bubbly – so don’t forget to let us know if you’ve been accepted for a role.

Why did you choose this firm and this role?

Deloitte has an excellent reputation across the globe, especially for the innovative use of technology in data analytics. Tax is present in every area of life, and I found indirect tax particularly interesting.

What was the toughest part of the application process? And your favourite part?

At the assessment centre, there was a group exercise where we had to analyse some scenarios and present our decisions to a board of interviewers. This was pretty challenging as it was very technical, but was also my favourite part as it was good to discuss with other team members and get a feel for how strategy meetings are run at Deloitte.

Were you surprised by anything in the process?

I was surprised by how friendly the interviewers were, particularly the partners. They ensured we felt comfortable and although the interview was technical in places, it felt more like a chat than an interrogation, which is not always the case for job interviews!

What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?

Be confident, show enthusiasm, and try to remember why you applied in the first place!

What's your pre-interview ritual or lucky charm?

I like to chat to other interviewees while waiting outside. It's a good way to calm nerves, and also to network - remember, these might be future colleagues!
