Melissa is a Mechatronics and Robotics student from Middlesex University. She secured an industrial placement as an Electronics and Electrical Engineer at AWE in Reading, through Bright Network. 
First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I'm currently studying Mechatronics and Robotics at Middlesex University. Ever since I was young, I've had a passion for cars and cooking, which has shaped my interests and career path.
Growing up, I always wanted to be involved in something innovative and hands-on. I dreamed of working with advanced technology and creating things that could make a difference.
This led me to choose Mechatronics and Robotics, a field that perfectly combines my love for engineering and cutting-edge tech.”
What motivated you to apply for the role?
“My motivation for entering this sector comes from the endless possibilities it offers. I love the idea of designing and building systems that can improve everyday life, whether it's through smart cars or automated solutions. Plus, the dynamic nature of this field means there's always something new to learn and explore.”
What was your application journey like?
“My application journey to AWE for an Electronics Engineering placement was quite an adventure. To prepare, I focused on building a strong foundation in electronics through various projects and coursework. I also spent time researching the placement programme and its requirements to ensure I was well-prepared for the application process.
The part I was most nervous about was the interview. I wanted to make sure I could effectively communicate my passion for electronics and my unique interests in cars and cooking. I spent a lot of time practicing and refining my answers to potential questions.”
What are you most proud of about your journey?
“I was most proud of passing the interview stage as it was my first interview. I overcame this by talking to my university and to family and friends."

“At the moment my future involves completing my final year studies. I'll then see what the future holds for me!"
