Securing a Training Contract with Freshfields - Top tips from Alex, a Trainee Solicitor

Created on 31 Jul 2017

Oxford graduate Alex has secured a Training Contract at Magic Circle firm Freshfields. Alex talked us through the firm’s application process, as well as sharing the best piece of career advice he’s ever received!

What drew you to apply for Freshfields?

One of the main reasons why I wanted to apply for Freshfields  was because I wanted to work for a Magic Circle firm.

What did the application process involve?

The application process included an 850-word application on why I wanted to work at the firm, what skills I had that wee relevant to the role and my understanding of commercial awareness. There was also an assessment centre, which involved an interview with a Partner and a written exercise.

What was the most enjoyable and most challenging part of the application process?

The interviews were challenging, as they were very detailed and were focused on commercial awareness. Writing an 850-word application covering several different points was also a challenge to do so in a balanced way. The most enjoyable aspect of the process was meeting the Partners, who gave the impression that Freshfields was a friendly environment to work in.

What is the best piece of career advice you’ve been given?

Do your research and tailor each application individually. It is not good enough to give generic responses.

And finally … what will you spend your first pay check on?

Maybe a nice new watch!
