Securing a Training Contract with Ashurst - Top tips from Saxon

Created on 10 Aug 2017

After a successful Vacation Scheme, Cardiff law graduate Saxon has accepted a Training Contract with Ashurst. Saxon had a chat with us about the firm and shared his top three tips for other aspiring lawyers.

What drew you to apply for Ashurst?

I knew the firm well as they have a strong presence in Australia, which is where I am originally from, and having done my research it seemed to be a logical choice for me.

What did the application process involve?

I obtained a Training Contract offer by applying through the Vacation Scheme. To get onto the Vacation Scheme, I had to submit a written application. This was followed by a meeting with graduate recruitment and a written assessment. The interview for the Training Contract itself was more in depth and quite challenging.

What would be your top three tips for members looking to follow in your footsteps?

  1. If you want to work as a lawyer, you need to start early with your applications - don’t hang around!
  2. You must do your research and I think spending about 3-4 hours on each application is realistic, paying careful attention to your answers to extended questions.
  3. Don’t panic in your interview and remember your first few interview situations might not go perfectly - and that’s ok, because you can learn from your mistakes.

How has Bright Network helped?

I wanted to get the best information I could about Ashurst when I applied, so that I was confident in my research. The Bright Network website features Testimonials by employees from Ashurst and this I found this very valuable.

And finally … what will you spend your first pay check on?

I’d probably save the money, but that’s just me!
