A huge congratulations to William Devine who has secured a graduate role with Alpha FMC. Here he gives us his take on the recruitment process and gives some great advice for future applicants.
Why did you choose this role? Why did you choose this firm?
I chose this role as it’s a great position to do as although it’s a tech role it’s also a fast paced and exciting role as it’s a financial company as well.
The firm's employees all seemed like genuine people and everyone who worked there seemed quite happy in their jobs and they were very chatty and their transparency was really comforting. There was a wide range of people and I was exposed to quite a few of them during my day there and the atmosphere of the company was very welcoming.
What was the most challenging part of the application process? And your favourite part?
My favourite part was the assessment centre. It was really fun and wasn’t rushed at all. In the evenings there were some drinks and it as great as you could just relax and chat to the people who worked there. Everyone who worked at the company was involved and it was great exposure to the company as a whole.
The most challenging part was the coding test as it wasn’t run of the mill. It tests your abilities but there were some tough challenges to it. Also coping with the variety of things you had to do during the skills test. It’s also a very communication heavy role so I really had to work on my communication and presentation skills.
What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?
- The role is not 50/50 technology skills and inter personal skills. There is a lot of communicating and presenting that needs to be done so make sure you’re able to articulate your thoughts well.
- Brush up on your coding skills. The test isn’t easy and it’s quite honed in what they do as a company rather than being a generic test so make sure you’re well prepared.
- Know why you want to work for Alpha FMC. They ask you this throughout the day so it’s always good to have a solid answer. Also why you want to work in a tech consulting role that also deals with asset management.
What was the toughest question you faced at interview?
The toughest part was explaining how my background lead me to Alpha FMC. Why I had the skills relevant to be a part of this company.
