At Bloomberg in London: “Here, everyone can be themselves.”

Book open Reading time: 3 mins

After graduating from the University of Southampton with a languages degree, Suad, originally from Madrid, joined Bloomberg’s Customer Support team in 2017, assisting clients in French, Italian and Spanish before moving to Human Resources, supporting clients internally and externally.

Two years later, her Bloomberg journey took her to the Analytics team. And in April 2022, Suad joined Sales, working with London-based clients – pension funds and insurance companies.

Suad

Here, Suad shares what she loves about living in London, how she uses her language skills at work, and what sets the Bloomberg culture apart.

What do you like the most about your role?

I like helping the clients. If I can help a person who may have never used the Bloomberg Terminal before, it completely transforms the process for them. I help them use the Terminal more effectively to enable them to work in a better way.

Customers are really grateful when you’re able to answer their questions and help find solutions. Afterwards, when they thank you, I feel I’ve had a good impact, because it has helped them with something that might  have taken hours for them to do.

How do you use your languages at work?

I use different languages to talk to colleagues and clients. We have customers all over the world and not all of our clients speak English. The fact that you can talk to a person in their native language makes them more comfortable and offers a better experience. Previously, when I worked in Customer Service, part of my role was to speak with clients who felt more comfortable in Spanish, or who simply didn’t speak English.

Do you feel you bring your own personality to work?

At Bloomberg, everyone can be themselves, and Bloomberg wants you to be yourself. I love coming to the office, I love the feeling, talking to my friends, my clients, and joining communities which I’m proud to be part of.

Have you done any volunteering that has affected you or that you liked a lot?

Preparing meals for the homeless and helping children with their homework are both volunteer activities that I’ve participated in recently that mean a lot to me.

I’m also part of a community called B-ABLE, (the Bloomberg Abilities Community)  where I write a monthly newsletter.. I’m also in a group called Toastmasters, which takes me out of my comfort zone because we talk about a variety of  different topics which has helped my professional development.

Let’s talk about London…what do you like most about living here?

The people and the atmosphere. It is very inclusive and there are always things to do. After a day in the office, you can head straight to the cinema or to a park. You can’t get bored and there are a lot of things you can do for free!

Anything you’d recommend doing?

Cycling! Go explore London on a bike, because there are a lot of roads that prioritize cyclists and you can see everything; museums, parks and other famous parts of London.

What attracted you to move and work for us?

The fact that I could use my languages. What I love is that Bloomberg allowed me to combine finance, technology and the use of my languages. London is a city that is so multicultural, I can’t imagine a better place to be. It offers many opportunities and you can easily travel to other places in Europe from London.

How did you take the steps to create your own career path?

Here, you don’t have to say: “I’ve studied languages, so I’m going to stay on this specific team.” If you want to try something new, you can network with people and you have the platform to do whatever you want.
