At Bloomberg in London: “I can dive into different projects, which helps me develop further.”

Book open Reading time: 3 mins

Meet Luca Berlin, originally from Munich, Germany. He’s been a data analyst at Bloomberg in London for two years.

German-speaking employees in Bloomberg’s London office work with a variety of clients across financial services, alongside colleagues in regional hubs in Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Düsseldorf and extending to clients based in Austria and Switzerland. Bloomberg’s expertise in the market and our employees’ abilities to engage with clients in their native language is of critical importance.

Here, Luca shares what he loves about living in London, how he uses his language skills at work, and what sets the Bloomberg culture apart.

So, why London?

London is simply a fantastic city, extremely international, just a very lively atmosphere,

Whether you want to do something sporty, want to continue your education or are more on the creative side, the city has everything to offer. Everyone is up for activities, whether it’s going out, chatting in a cafe or heading out of town. There’s a variety of things to do.

What prompted you to apply for a position at Bloomberg?

Bloomberg gave a presentation at my university when I was doing my master’s degree and I noticed that the people were extremely open and approachable. And I got the sense that this would be a very nice atmosphere to work in.

What do you like the most about your role?

What I like most is that I can choose what projects I want to do, whether it goes more in a technical direction that requires coding or in a financial direction, where I work more on developing myself and learn about certain financial concepts. I simply love this diversity because I am still relatively undecided about what I want to do and this way I am able to dive into different projects, which helps me develop further.

The culture here in Bloomberg really helps you to focus on exploring what you want to do in your career. And it really helps develop it.

What is an advantage of using German at work?

German is very helpful at work. Simply because you can better relate to clients and bring more aspects of your personality into the conversation.

As a German, there are two things that I find stand out. Firstly, punctuality and secondly, simply hard work. The hard work is extremely appreciated here and as a result, you can really develop yourself and show yourself strongly in your role.

Culture-wise, as a native German, there are two things that I really connect with at Bloomberg. Firstly, the pace of the organization and secondly, simply hard work. The hard work is extremely appreciated here and, as a result, you can really develop yourself and show your best self in your role.

What’s it like to work as part of such a multicultural team?

It’s very interesting to be part of a multicultural team because everyone brings their own personality to work and that’s how you really learn to collaborate with other people from other backgrounds. This really helps in our own personal development and is a quality that you just don’t get that much if you work in a less international setting.

How does the environment at Bloomberg encourage you to be yourself?

The fact that the environment here is extremely inclusive means that you can simply be yourself at work.

My biggest fear when I moved to London was simply that I wouldn’t integrate here. But I was completely wrong. Aside from meeting new people here in London, it was easy to integrate professionally, because Bloomberg fosters such an open and inclusive atmosphere.
