Maia Godemer

Sustainable Finance Researcher, BloombergNEF, London

Can you share more about your career journey at Bloomberg?

I have had a bit of an unconventional career path at Bloomberg. I started on the help desk as a fixed income advanced specialist, a role I really enjoyed since it enabled me to  learn a lot on the ground. Then, I became an account manager in London and Paris, focusing on fixed income and derivatives users. During that time, I also worked on Bloomberg’s Sustainable Finance solutions for Europe’s key banks. Today, I’m a sustainable finance researcher for BloombergNEF (BNEF), where I’ve been for the past 3.5 years.

How have you been able to innovate and give back in your role?

Writing research on sustainable finance requires innovative thinking on a daily basis, as you need to find solutions to new issues for which there have been no textbooks until recently. I wasn’t taught about sustainable finance in school – it didn’t exist at the time!

For me, sharing knowledge is the best way to give back. I’ve participated in mentoring programs at Bloomberg, and we sometimes host students at BNEF. We also try to make some of our key findings available to a wider audience — whether through blog posts, social media or conferences.

What is most exciting about the field you’re working in?

I’m very passionate about my area of research, so it’s hard to pick just one thing! I think that regulatory developments will help align our financial systems with wider societal goals such as mitigating climate change and promoting social justice. As such, I’m looking forward to seeing governments make finance become sustainable.

Where do you think you’ve added the most value?

I like to believe it’s in my research — when I help make complicated topics less complex so they can be turned into actionable insights. I’ve already had the opportunity to present my work to bankers, senior executives, NGOs, ministers, policymakers and fellow analysts, all of which I never thought I’d be able to do so early in my career.

Bassel Mahmoud

Senior Investor Portfolios and Shareholder Activism Data Analyst, London

Can you share more about your career journey at Bloomberg?

My journey at Bloomberg began five years ago. In my first year with the company, I was fortunate to be part of the team that launched Bloomberg’s first Shareholder Activism product, which offers live activist campaign data and research. I had the chance to promote the product to both internal and external stakeholders, and also got to collaborate with colleagues across departments to identify opportunities that would help grow our client base.

After four years of managing the Shareholder Activism product, I wanted to pursue a new challenge. As such, I decided to shift my focus to Bloomberg’s Investor Portfolios product. I now use my market knowledge and client-facing experience to support the team, while continuing to upskill within this space.

How have you been able to innovate and give back in your role?

In today’s digital age, the opportunities for innovation are endless. A big focus of my role is direct client engagement and cross-departmental networking. This not only allows me and my team to better understand current demand, but it also helps us innovate in line with upcoming client needs and future market trends.

In addition, I lead the Data Advanced News Training Program at Bloomberg, which teaches analysts how to turn data into newsworthy articles. We recently expanded the program’s reach globally, and also introduced a shorter version as part of our summer internship curriculum.

What is most exciting about the field you’re working in?

My team’s goal is to have more reliable data on all quality metrics, and to create a better user interface to appeal to a wider range of clients. The opportunities here are endless, and having to be agile and adapt to changing market needs is an exciting challenge.

To this end, I’m currently managing a team of research analysts who are working with hundreds of fund houses to intake proprietary portfolio holdings data so it can be seamlessly integrated across the Bloomberg Terminal. This will enhance the timeliness, accuracy and coverage of our data, and also improve the way clients interact with our product.

Where do you think you’ve added the most value?

I’ve been part of every stage of the product life cycle, from development to launch. This has enabled me to develop a strong network of contacts across the firm. I believe my value lies in my ability to bridge the gap between Bloomberg’s clients and my colleagues across different departments.

Claudia Lucciola

Team Leader, Fixed Income Advanced Specialists, London

Can you share more about your career journey at Bloomberg?

I heard about Bloomberg from a dear, late friend, Stephanie Santora. She raved about the company’s dynamic and collaborative environment. When I was on exchange in Switzerland during university, I participated in the Data, Analytics, and Sales Spring Insight Week to learn more about potential career opportunities at Bloomberg. Shortly thereafter, I was offered a summer internship, which turned into a full-time position in the Analytics department.

I first started out as a generalist in Fixed Income, developing my knowledge about the financial markets and our clients. I then joined the Fixed Income Advanced Specialist Team after taking a deep dive into fixed income workflows. When my previous team leader joined another department in the company, I decided to apply for his role — and he was immensely supportive and encouraging.

How have you been able to innovate and give back in your role?

What I really love about Bloomberg is that if you have an idea, people will listen — whether you’ve been at the company for one year or 10. When I was an advanced specialist in Analytics, I revamped our internal training material to include ESG content so that we would be better equipped to assist clients in this area. Then, as a team leader, I formalized an “ESG Taskforce” to help clients with more in-depth requests.

What is most exciting about the field you’re working in?

Environmental risks and their impact on sovereign debt is an area I find really intriguing. As governments aim to tackle these issues, they will need help from the financial industry. As investment professionals channel funds into climate mitigation, adaptation, and preservation, having access to quality data for risk valuations is crucial. As Bloomberg develops tools and solutions for these considerations, I’m excited to see how they will be used by our clients and the broader financial industry.

Where do you think you’ve added the most value?

I hope I’ve added value to the brilliant and incredibly hardworking team I have the privilege of managing! They inspire me every day, and I hope to provide them with the same recognition, empowerment and mentorship other leaders have given me during my time at Bloomberg.
