The importance of giving back at Hiscox

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

We recently launched our first Impact Report, taking a Group-wide look at all the charitable activity that’s been happening across Hiscox and highlighting some of the good causes we’ve been supporting.

The report shows that in 2019 we donated over $1 million to more than 180 charities around the world and completed almost 2,000 volunteering hours.

This is a fantastic achievement and we’re really proud of our employees raising money and giving up their time to volunteer for a good cause. By allowing us to see where we are, we hope that publishing this report helps us to have an even bigger impact in the future.

Our people go the extra mile and we match them

Giving back is important to our employees and we reward their fundraising achievements through ‘matched funding’. The Hiscox Foundation is a registered charity in the UK and USA, and anyone can apply to match funds raised or ask for support for a good cause.

Hiscox Gives is our employee-led initiative which empowers our people to get involved in fundraising and volunteering and charity committees in our larger offices support and coordinate charitable activity, getting the whole office involved.

Last year, our people rose to the challenge in a big way - running, baking, cycling, climbing mountains and more to raise money for charity – many of which were locally chosen, such as homelessness prevention and local hospital charities.

Supporting our employees to lend a helping hand

Across the Group, our people put in more than 1,925 volunteering hours last year, mostly through Hiscox-organised initiatives. In London and Colchester, employees take time out of their day on a weekly basis during term time, to help children with their reading in local schools. We have coached a youth baseball team in New York, helped build houses for disaster-stricken families in Sri Lanka and our Bermuda team take part in litter picking to help keep the island clean. These are just a few examples and we want to do even more.

Focused giving for a bigger impact

Caring for our environment and supporting our communities continues to be a key focus, including our Hiscox bees in York where we have our very own apiary of around 120,000 bees, looked after by employee beekeepers, and our sponsorship of Under 11 Youth Cricket in Bermuda is among many charitable donations we made to support the local community.

Supporting causes that align with our strategy and values gives us purpose, such as the charity Kiva, with whom we have commenced a three-year partnership in the US, which empowers people in underserved communities to improve their lives through access to financial services.

These are just some examples of what we’ve been doing, and with Hiscox Gives officially launching in Europe this year there are many more exciting things ahead. Our hope is that we can build on the achievements highlighted in this report and do even better next year.
