I am constantly challenged with finding more efficient ways to carry on with the processes above. In my current placement, I work directly with one of the teams in the IT department, reporting on the status of our server infrastructure, and any errors that might occur on the day. I also help with any needed analysis or documentation that could help in better managing the costs and resources that pertain to our department.
My team works in a very collaborative way, so there are constant meetings that seem like workshops (where we all work together to solve a bug or an issue in our infrastructure), which is quite a practical way of learning.
What caught my attention the most was the effort that the programme’s team has put into showcasing their offer and testimonials from other graduate. Also, being able to relocate after a year seemed very interesting to me, as I wanted to be exposed to as many different work environments as possible. I am very proud to say that I helped implement and train for a service desk system in the business I worked during my first year. It was a particularly interesting part of my placement because I had to learn from scratch how ITSM works, as well as some basic project management skills.
I am only in my second year and the programme has already shown me different aspects of IT that I could pursue, as well as different work environments. It is a fast-paced, challenging environment filled with learning curves, which is exactly what I expect for any job, including the one I want in the future! I am very invested in project management and in any roles that allow me to introduce change in a business, so that is definitely a path I want to pursue in the future.
The best thing about the application is that I had the sense that even if I didn’t get in, I got a lot from it: knowing more about the company, meeting previous graduates and even the CEO! The application process was a challenging one and a bit foreign to me (it was my first time applying for a graduate scheme), but fortunately I had a team answering all of my questions and guiding me through the process, so I never felt lost!
My first tip would definitely to be very open-minded about what is put in front of you and to embrace your challenges. Also, always take noted of lessons learned throughout your journey. Not everything in your job will turn out how you would’ve envisioned, but at least you would have learned how to be a better professional!
