AWE plc not only plays a crucial role in national defence, they are a centre of scientific and technological excellence, with some of the most advanced research, design and production facilities in the world. If your curious mind is filled with questions about pursuing a career where your work was mission critical, here are some key FAQs to help you on your journey.

Q. I’m interested in one of your future career’s programmes. What does the application and selection process entail?

Our process is similar for all future careers programmes and is based on our values and culture. You’ll need to apply online where you’ll complete an assessment which will help you decide if AWE is the right place for you. Then it’s simply submitting your application and uploading your CV.

We’ll review it and, if successful, you will go into a three-stage process which consists of an online aptitude test and an assessment centre based on site in Aldermaston. If you are successful at any of the stages above, you’ll be given further details on what to expect and how to prepare.

Q. How will I know my application has been received?

We make sure that all applications receive an acknowledgement once completed. This is done through an automated email which you should receive shortly after submitting your application.

Q. Can I apply for more than one programme at a time?

We ask that you make one application for the scheme most suited to your skills and experience. If there are multiple roles, then please do highlight the additional ones you would like to be considered for in your application. Please note, if your application is not a match for the programme, we reserve the right to amend your application to the right role for you.

Q. How long will AWE hold my personal information for?

We will hold your application information for 12 months, after which time it will be removed from the system automatically. In line with GDPR guidelines, if you are not successful at any stage, you’ll be asked if you would be happy for AWE to retain your information for future career matches. If the answer is no, we will remove your details from the system immediately.

Q. How long until I hear back from AWE following my assessment?

We don’t like to keep people waiting, so we aim to respond to all assessments within five working days. We also believe that development is important, whether successful or not. Therefore, we aim to provide feedback on your outcome either way.

Q. I haven’t been successful, can I re-apply?

We welcome re-applications from unsuccessful candidates. We recommend 12 months between applications to allow you time to demonstrate that you have taken feedback onboard and worked on the advice provided. This will give you a better opportunity when considered a second time.

Q. Your programmes are closed. Are there any other routes into the business?

We only have one intake per year for our programmes. However, from time to time we offer front line roles which may be of interest. These will be advertised on our career’s pages, so we recommend you keep checking in to view any roles which may be available.

Q. Do you offer support for attendance at assessment centres?

We can offer some support for those travelling over a certain mileage to attend. You should let the future careers team know if you wish to claim expenses. They will make sure you have the right form for completion and outline the process for you.

Q. I have heard about Security Clearance being a requirement. What is this?

Because of the nature of the work we do, we require all potential employees to go through a security clearance check if they are offered a role with us. This check is run by the UK Security Vetting Agency. Depending on the level of clearance required you may be asked to complete some forms and upload ID or even attend an in-person interview and/or medical assessment. More details can be found on the Ministry of Defence website.

Q. When will the programme start?

Our Graduate and Undergraduate programmes tend to start in the Autumn, around September to October.

Q. What happens at the end of the programme?

As a graduate with AWE plc, you’ll be offered a permanent contract with our business from the day you start.  At the end of the two-year graduate programme, you’ll have an interview to assess your level of competence and confirm you’re ready to move on into a role within the business.
