A 2026 MSc Computer Science graduate from The University of Law

From A Non-Technical Background to MSc Success
Coming from a non-technical background, having studied International Relations at undergraduate level, my transition into Computer Science was a major academic shift. I credit that success to the university’s supportive professors and the well-designed course structure, which makes complex concepts accessible while also offering practical exposure to in-demand tools and technologies used in real-world professional environments.
Why This MSc Works for Career Changers
My decision to pursue an MSc in Computer Science was shaped by my experience working as a Software Quality Assurance Engineer. Although professional certifications helped me enter the field, I realised they were not enough to support my progression into more senior roles. The University of Law stood out because of its conversion MSc Computer Science programme, which welcomes students from non-technical academic backgrounds and provides a clear pathway into the tech industry.
Supportive Faculty and Modules That Matter
One of the programme’s greatest strengths is its supportive faculty, who are always willing to help students navigate challenges and succeed academically. The course itself is thoughtfully structured and several modules were especially valuable to me. Applications of Artificial Intelligence introduced me to the fundamentals of large language models and demonstrated how AI can be integrated into traditional workflows to improve productivity. Data Driven Decision Making helped me develop practical data analysis skills using widely used libraries and frameworks such as NumPy, Pandas and Scikit-learn. Software Development gave me the opportunity to build my own program while understanding the strengths of different frontend and backend technologies.
Transforming Skills into Real-World Careers
Together, these modules enabled me to expand my capabilities significantly, helping me transition from a Quality Assurance Engineer to a Full Stack Developer. Beyond academics, the University of Law also provides excellent additional resources, including an Employability Portal to support job applications and a Skills Academy that offers technical certifications to strengthen students’ profiles for prospective employers. The university’s societies also create valuable opportunities for students across different disciplines to network, collaborate and contribute to digital products and projects.
Dissertation Tips for Success
For anyone undertaking the dissertation, my advice would be to begin thinking about it as early as the first semester and connect with project supervisors as soon as possible. Their guidance can be extremely helpful in shaping the right approach and ensuring steady progress on the final project.
Why I Recommend the MSc Computer Science
I would strongly recommend the MSc Computer Science programme at The University of Law to anyone who may feel intimidated by pursuing a technical qualification. Whether you come from a non-technical undergraduate background or already hold a degree in Computer Science, The University of Law’s Teaching Faculty offers the support, structure and practical learning needed to succeed from day one through to graduation.
