Amit originally joined Grant Thornton as a Placement Student in the Corporate Finance Advisory team. This provided Amit with valuable insight into the role and organisation as a whole. This led to him joining the Rotational Advisory Graduate Scheme. Below, Amit has outlined his experience at Grant Thornton.

My career at Grant Thornton started with a placement year in the Corporate Finance Advisory team. Looking back, it was a great decision to gain some industry experience whilst still at university. It gave me exposure to the full life cycle of a business and allowed me to make a conscious decision from early, that I wanted to be a well-rounded advisor that could adapt to a constantly changing marketplace. With this in mind, I felt like the Rotational Advisory Programme at Grant Thornton was the best graduate scheme in the market to help me achieve this.

Whilst studying for my ACA, I was given the opportunity to experience the full breadth of Advisory across Corporate Finance (M&A), Consultancy, Restructuring and Debt Advisory. Not only was I able to leverage experience from my placement year to gain further responsibility on M&A deals, but I was also able to lead on various workstreams as part of the high-profile BrightHouse administration.

I am now part of the Debt Advisory team and am enjoying working on a spectrum of deals from acquisition finance facilities to large scale development fundraising packages. The lender universe is hugely fragmented and it has been great to see how the team have built relationships with the various funders in the market and can advise across the entire capital stack to support businesses on their short and longer term financing requirements.

Grant Thornton really encourages ‘intrapreneurship’, and this has allowed me to also get involved in wider activities, from developing a Junior Leadership Team, to helping bridge the relationship with the charity Teach First.

I’ve met inspirational people who are true leaders in their fields and made a real impact on UK businesses. Our culture is unique. You’re listened to. You have a voice. You’re given freedom. And we also have lots of fun.

I am excited by what the future holds and will be looking to use the broad set of skills the trainee scheme has given me to build my own relationships in the market. I am fortunate to have benefited from quality mentorship and coaching throughout my time here. If there was one piece of advice I could give to the new trainees, it would be to seek a mentor early. There is no better way to learn than from those who have already done it.
