National Audit Office

Discover a Career with Purpose at the NAO
At the National Audit Office (NAO), we occupy a truly unique position. Entirely independent of government, we scrutinise public spending on behalf of Parliament and investigate major government projects and programmes. Our work directly benefits every citizen in the UK - helping the economy and society function more effectively by improving financial management and the delivery of vital public services across the public sector.
Why Join Us?
Here, your work will have real impact. From day one, you’ll be involved in audits and projects that examine how government resources are used and help drive improvements in public sector organisations. Our insights inform national debates and influence some of the most significant decisions made by government.
You’ll collaborate with talented, driven colleagues in a supportive team environment, delivering high-quality work that makes a difference. No two days are the same - expect variety, challenge and the chance to grow professionally.
Your Path to Qualification
Our three-year graduate training programme leads to qualification as an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). With pass rates consistently at or above the national average, you’ll be well-positioned to unlock exciting career opportunities.
Make an Impact from Day One
You’ll take on responsibility early in your career, contributing to our financial audit work and gaining exposure to high-profile value-for-money studies and assurance projects. Whether it’s helping improve performance at the Ministry of Defence or supporting the Royal Household, your work will give you access to people, places and experiences that are unique to the NAO.
