What could I be involved in as a Diplomatic and Development Economics fast streamer?
Working with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), you’ll be at the intersection of economics, international relations and global policy. You’ll grow your economics expertise working on diverse, high-impact projects that span countries and themes - from macroeconomic stability to sustainable development. Analysing how economic trends affect UK and global interests, you’ll deliver data-driven insight and policy advice to ministers. You’ll inform decision-making on international policy, diplomacy, partnerships and aid strategy. From alleviating poverty to ensuring security and prosperity for the UK, you’ll work on issues that matter to millions of people.
Training includes
This scheme combines core Civil Service Fast Stream learning with FCDO-specific training to develop your leadership, diplomatic tradecraft and international capabilities. In some cases, this may also include language training. With on-the-job experience, peer-to-peer learning and formal courses - including structured professional economics training - you’ll be equipped to pursue both analytical and policy roles.
To apply, you’ll need
- British citizenship (those with dual nationality may apply).
- To have been a resident in the UK for at least 5 of the previous 10 years, including a consecutive 12-month period.
- A 2:1 degree, a degree apprenticeship or higher (or be expecting achieve this), or a post-graduate degree in an economic subject. For mixed degrees, at least 50% should be in economics.
