What could I be involved in as a Diplomatic and Development fast streamer?
As part of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) you’ll work on critical issues at the heart of global events. You’ll have a dynamic and impactful career, as you help to develop and implement policies that champion the interests of British citizens, safeguard the UK’s security, and tackle poverty and other complex international challenges. From 2026, the FCDO will introduce a China Pathway as part of this scheme, to develop future leaders’ understanding of China’s political system, economy, language, culture and global influence.
Training includes
With a tailored programme focussed on policy and leadership skills and growing your
knowledge in diplomatic tradecraft and international development, you’ll also have access to mentoring and work shadowing. This will be enhanced by on-the-job learning and, in some cases, language training. You will also typically embark on an overseas placement as part of your development journey.

- British citizenship (those with dual nationality may apply).
- To have been a resident in the UK for at least 5 of the previous 10 years, including a consecutive 12-month period.
- A 2:2, a degree apprenticeship or higher (or be expecting to achieve this) in any subject.
