What does this team do?

Indirect Taxes are taxes charged on everyday transactional activities, and our team advises on how businesses should manage these. The most well-known Indirect Tax is VAT, but we also cover other transactional taxes including Insurance Premium Tax and Air Passenger Duty, amongst others.

Our Indirect Tax Advisory team help our clients manage their VAT and Indirect Tax positions – whether it is advising on multi-million-pound transactions, VAT on everyday retail products, or how we can help clients adopt tech to report VAT correctly on their income and expenditure. As well as being at the forefront of tax technology, Indirect Taxes involve an understanding of case law, so skillsets and experiences in our team are wide-ranging.

What skills and academic qualifications do I need?

This programme is for university students who are doing well academically and want to test their skills in the real world. You must be in the penultimate year of your course, or going onto a Masters, and you need to be on track to achieve a predicted degree classification of 2:1 or above in any discipline.

We have identified 10 core skills that are essential to all our roles in Early Careers. To learn more about these skills and their detailed descriptions, please visit the 'Discover What We Look For' section in our Candidate Zone.

Students who perform well on our Summer Vacation Scheme may have the opportunity to convert into the corresponding Graduate role for the following year. However the Graduate conversion must be within the same team and location as the Summer placement. For this reason, we kindly ask that applicants only apply to our Manchester Summer Vacation Scheme, if they know they also wish to be considered for the corresponding, permanent, Full Time Graduate role in Manchester.

Your work will range from compliance support, providing technical advice, support in disputes, advising on large transactions and other.

“What I enjoy most about my role at Deloitte is helping clients navigate complex VAT issues and understanding how VAT rules apply in different commercial situations. Every client and project brings new challenges, and I work alongside experts from a wide range of specialisms, which provides constant opportunities to learn and develop”. - Indirect Tax Consultant

Where will I work?

At Deloitte we recognise how important face-to-face interaction is for your development in a new role. We also understand that our people need flexibility, which is why we operate a hybrid system, with a combination of office and home working. If you’re in a client-facing role, you might be expected to attend client sites on certain days, while your meetings will be a mix of online and in-person events. Please note your final assessment and induction will also be in-person, to give you the opportunity to network and build relationships.

All our workspaces are accessible, however, if you require further flexibility due to a health condition or caring responsibilities, please discuss this with our team.

How will I develop?

We want our people to have worldclass practical experience coupled with the technical rigour and knowledge that comes from the right professional qualification.

We think the best experience is being immersed in client work, working alongside other team members, and learning the practical skills that will set you up for a successful career. That will be the initial focus whether you are a Graduate, an Industrial Placement or a BrightStart, supported by internal training and support from coaches, people leaders, and your team.

We think this is vital and will set you up for success when we further support your development with a professional qualification, recognising that different roles across our business align to different pathways. The specific qualification will depend on the area of specialism you join and may include  joint or accelerated programmes leading to qualifications like Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) and Charted Tax Adviser (CTA) as well as other more specialist routes focused on tax or technical expertise such as Tax Customs qualifications.
