The role

We are looking to recruit a Graduate/Junior Digital Consultant – Software Development to join our Data and Digital team. In this role, you will support the design, development, and maintenance of software solutions that underpin our wider consultancy work. As part of a small, dynamic team, you will have a genuine opportunity to help shape the direction and delivery of our products and services.

Your primary focus will be Python-based software development across a broad range of problems: from data processing and automation to backend logic, internal tools, and scientific or model development. Experience or interest in backend services, APIs and data workflows would be highly valued, as would any exposure to scientific or analytical programming. We are looking for someone who writes clean, practical code and brings an openness to exploring new technologies, tools, and approaches.

You will typically work on a range of diverse projects, spanning different environmental and technical domains. This means being able to switch context comfortably and get up to speed on unfamiliar ideas and subject areas quickly. Working closely with colleagues to understand requirements, you will design, plan and implement solutions.

This is an exceptional opportunity to join us at an exciting time for both our business and the environmental consultancy sector. You will work at the heart of a friendly, supportive team and play an important role in delivering high-quality digital solutions for our projects. You will receive one-to-one support, mentoring, and learning and development from experienced colleagues, with external training provided where required.

We are seeking motivated candidates who are comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. Curiosity, enthusiasm, and a proactive approach to innovation and problem-solving are essential.

Skills and experience we are looking for

Essential:

  • Confident working knowledge of Python as your primary programming language, with the ability to write clear, maintainable software.
  • Experience using Python to build practical tools, scripts and workflows across a range of problems (e.g. data processing, automation, backend logic or analytical tasks).
  • Good software development best practices, including version control systems such as Git.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a relevant software, data or engineering role, including internships, placement years or project-based work.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Python data libraries (e.g. pandas, NumPy, GeoPandas).
    • Scientific computing, environmental modelling or analytical workflows.
    • Geospatial/GIS tools and spatial data (e.g. QGIS, GeoPandas, Rasterio, GDAL).
    • Developing services and working with RESTful APIs (e.g. FastAPI, Flask, Django).
    • Relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL; PostGIS for spatial work).
    • Development experience within Linux-based or containerised systems (e.g. Docker).
    • Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS) for hosting tools, storage, pipelines or APIs.
  • Comfortable working with technical documentation: for example, translating equations, algorithms or described methodologies from a report into working code.
  • An understanding of how AI-assisted coding tools can be used to support, accelerate, and coordinate software development.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant A-Levels (or equivalent).
  • A degree (or equivalent professional experience) in a relevant subject such as computer science, software development, data science, engineering, mathematics, physics, environmental science with strong programming content, or a related field.
