The first step of a career that could take you around the world
We’re MI6, also known as Secret Intelligence Service. Our mission is to protect the security and economic wellbeing of the UK from overseas threats such as regional instability, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. Working across the globe and in close partnership with MI5 and GCHQ, we help the Government to counter these threats through the provision of secret intelligence. A role in MI6 will see you providing vital support to this work, within a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.
As a Business Support Officer, you could be working across teams involved in intelligence, operations or corporate activity, helping to keep essential work running smoothly and securely. From coordinating priorities and managing information to supporting projects and colleagues, you’ll help ensure teams have what they need to enable mission-critical work across the organisation.
You’ll begin on a structured three-year development pathway, designed to help you build confidence and develop a broad range of skills. You’ll gain experience across different teams, learn how the organisation operates and develop the ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment. With support from your colleagues and access to training and development opportunities, you’ll build strong foundations for your career.
Once you’ve completed the 3-year development pathway, a range of opportunities will be open to you. This may include specialising in a particular area, moving into different teams or applying for roles overseas. Working internationally is a unique part of our organisation, giving you the opportunity to experience new environments, take on fresh challenges and continue developing your skills.
So what about you? This role is ideal if you’re looking for your first professional opportunity. You don’t need experience to apply, but you will have at least five GCSEs at grade 9–4 (A–C), including Maths and English Language (or equivalent).
You’ll be organised, proactive and comfortable working with others. You’ll enjoy learning new things, solving problems and helping others to succeed. Strong communication skills, attention to detail and a willingness to take on a variety of tasks will help you make the most of the role.
It’s important that you share our values of Integrity, Courage, Respect and Creativity, and are motivated by the opportunity to make a positive impact on the UK. We don’t look for a particular ‘type’ of person – we welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences.
Above all, you’ll be curious, motivated to learn and interested in building a career where you can make a meaningful contribution.

We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
