Years spent studying a STEM subject can leave you with a lot of knowledge and one big question: where does it all lead? MI6's first-ever technical internship is a chance to discover for yourself.

We're MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS). Our mission is to protect the security and economic wellbeing of the UK from overseas threats such as regional instability, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. Working across the globe and in close partnership with MI5 and GCHQ, we help the Government to counter these threats through the provision of secret intelligence. A role in MI6 will see you providing vital support to this work, within a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

As one of our technical interns, you’ll learn from specialists who use AI, cloud, software engineering and data every day, discovering how these disciplines tackle nationally significant challenges. Over the course of just over 11 weeks, you’ll make a meaningful impact, gaining insight into whether a career using your technical skills at MI6 is something you’d like to pursue after your degree.

Your internship begins with a two-week structured induction, where you’ll learn more about what we do and how we do it. After this, you’ll join your technical team and gain practical experience – it’s a great way to build new skills, develop your abilities, and discover what  working in technology involves. Throughout your time with us, you’ll have the support of a dedicated manager who will help you explore different areas and technical teams, from engineering and data science to many more. You’ll see the human side of how we operate across the different strands of our work, with the opportunity to experience our training through a short residential trip. Once your internship ends, you'll also have the opportunity to apply for our Technology Graduate Development Programme. If you choose to apply, you’ll go through the same selection process as external candidates.

To apply, you’ll need to be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality, with a valid British passport. You must be in your penultimate or final year of studying a STEM subject during the 2026/2027 academic year and have, or be expecting, a 2:2 degree classification (or above). You also must be from a Black, Asian, mixed-heritage, or other ethnic minority background, as well as a socially or economically disadvantaged background. We’re committed to creating a more representative workforce, and this internship is one of the ways we’re helping talented people from underrepresented backgrounds explore careers at MI6.

While you're with us, you'll be paid £672.35 per week for the duration of the internship, and you'll receive five paid days off to use over the course of it. While this internship is based in our London office, we can provide free accommodation and we will also help towards the costs of public transport to travel to us so you can join the internship (a single one-way journey to London), so you can make the most of your experience.

Please note that you’ll need to pass security checks – your placement will depend on this. For more details, please see the how to apply page on the website.

To be eligible to apply, you must meet the criteria above and be a British Citizen. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You can apply at the age of 17 years, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday. Full eligibility details can be found on our website.

At MI6 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We're interested in hearing from ethnic minority candidates with low socio-economic backgrounds who are currently underrepresented in our workforce.
