Joseph Hay, Quantitative Research Analyst in Global Markets

1. What attracted you to join our graduate programme?
I spent the prior summer as an intern, so I had a good understanding of the bank and its culture. The programme provides an environment where you can constantly test yourself and improve. Also, the Quantitative Research desk is very well regarded, so it gave me the opportunity to learn from some of the most talented professionals directly.
2. How has the programme helped you develop professionally?
My technical skills such as mathematical / statistical knowledge and coding have improved massively since joining the desk. The adaption from academic knowledge to applying methods to real world problems can be challenging, but the programme has given me the chance to practice this. Furthermore, being able to articulate ideas clearly and concisely is something I have improved a lot.
3. How soon were you given responsibility?
In Quant Research you are very much thrown in at the deep end, there is an expectation to get involved in idea generation and make valuable contributions almost immediately. This has helped me improve and gain confidence at a quick pace. You are given large amounts of responsibility, working tasks that are critical to the team and publishing research reports you have personally written.
4. What advice would you give to someone considering applying?
It is a very competitive programme with lots of applicants, so something on your CV that makes you stand out is important. This could be a personal project you have worked on outside university. In an interview, it will come across as positive if you are able to discuss something you are genuinely passionate about. A deep interest in markets is obviously also required!
