Alex's success story: Securing a graduate role at Zopa

Alex is an Natural Sciences (Chemistry) graduate from the University of Cambridge. He secured a role as a Credit Strategy Analyst at Zopa, through Bright Network.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

"I’ve always been naturally curious and driven to learn more — at school I was the person who constantly asked “why,” and that carried through to university."

"After graduating, I knew I wanted a role where I could apply those skills every day, which led me to explore analytical career paths through Bright Network. I’m thankful I found credit risk, as it combines complex technical challenges with the fascinating task of understanding real human behaviour. That blend of data, analysis, and impact is what motivates me and makes this career such a great fit."

What motivated you to apply for your role?

"It offered the perfect combination of technical challenge and real-world impact. As a Credit Strategy Analyst in the impairment team, I get to work at the heart of decision-making — using SQL and Python to analyse data, support business-critical reporting, and help shape how the bank manages credit risk. The chance to take on responsibility quickly and be trusted with projects that influence senior stakeholders was a huge draw for me."

"Another big reason was Zopa’s culture and stage of growth. Having gained its full banking licence in 2020, Zopa is expanding rapidly into areas like current accounts and broader financial products. It’s rare to join a company that has both the stability of a well-known fintech and the excitement of a fast-growing bank, and that balance was incredibly appealing."

What was the application process like?

"The application process at Zopa was smooth, supportive, and much faster than I expected. After completing the initial online tests, I had the chance to speak with the team ahead of the assessment day, which was incredibly useful. They explained what to expect, offered preparation tips, and helped me feel at ease before meeting everyone in person."

"I was impressed by how engaging and collaborative the experience was. Meeting graduates who had been through the same process made it feel more approachable, and the case studies were both challenging and genuinely interesting."

"What surprised me most was how efficient and personal the whole process was. From the assessment day to the final interview to receiving my offer, everything happened within a very short time frame — in fact, my final interview and offer were only hours apart!"

What have you learned from going through the process?

"I learned that interviews are less about having all the right answers and more about showing how you think and approach problems.

"I also learned the importance of talking through my reasoning, asking questions, and working collaboratively with the interviewers rather than trying to solve everything silently. A willingness to learn, adapt, and communicate clearly turned out to be far more important than knowing everything upfront."

 

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

"Focus on developing strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills. During the application process, case studies can feel daunting, but the key is not to overprepare with endless practice — instead, concentrate on how you approach problems, explain your reasoning, and collaborate with others."

"More broadly, seeking out mentors and asking questions has been invaluable — people at Zopa are always willing to share their knowledge, which has been one of the best ways to learn and grow."

Tell us about the future - what's next?

"I’m particularly looking forward to taking on more responsibility and ownership of projects. Being trusted with high-impact work so early in my career has been incredibly motivating, and I’m excited to continue contributing to business-critical initiatives that shape Zopa’s success."

"In the longer term, I see myself becoming an expert in the credit risk space while also developing leadership skills so I can guide others on their journeys. I’m motivated by the blend of technical challenge and human impact in this role, and I’m looking forward to continuously learning, adapting, and helping Zopa deliver on its mission to create fair, transparent financial products for customers."
