Amy is a BA Geography and Sociology graduate from the University of Leeds and a MSc Planning and Urban Leadership graduate from the University of West England. She secured a Town Planning internship at NHS Property Services in London, through Bright Network.
First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I enjoyed Geography at A-Level, so I decided to follow my interest in studying people and the environment at university.
With the threat of the climate crisis and widening social inequalities, I chose to apply my degree towards becoming a Town Planner, helping to create more sustainable and liveable cities.”
What motivated you to apply for your role?
“Having completed the first year of my master's and working part-time, I sought an internship to gain practical experience, broaden my understanding, and improve my chances of securing a graduate job.
NHS Property Services was previously unknown to me, but I was drawn to the company because of the unique challenges the team tackles in enhancing accessible and sustainable access to health facilities.”
What was the application journey like?
“I prepared for my application by using an online CV checker to fine-tune my CV, tailoring it specifically to the role and company, and highlighting relevant experience by extracting key skills the role requires.
The application process was very smooth and easy to navigate. The initial step involved submitting my CV along with responses to questions set by the employer, before progressing to a virtual interview.
I was nervous about the interview, but when you’re passionate, that really shines through. The interview was an enjoyable experience, as I gained greater insight into the company and the team. Speaking with planning professionals further enthused me to pursue my chosen career path.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“My advice would be to go the extra mile wherever possible to make your CV stand out, whether that’s through volunteering, extra-curricular activities or work experience. Check if your university offers access to an online CV checker, as these are invaluable for helping to perfect your application.
Try not to feel too pressured to choose a specific career path early on. Gaining work experience in a range of fields is extremely useful – the more you do, the more you can rule out, bringing you one step closer to finding the best fit for you!”
Tell us about the future. What’s next?

As a graduate, I’m excited to grow my network so I can progress in the profession and have a broad range of contacts to turn to for advice.”
