Anna's success story: Securing a graduate role at Arcadis

Created on 26 Sep 2025

Anna is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from the University of Nottingham. She secured a Graduate Fire Engineer role at Arcadis in London.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

“Growing up, I loved maths and science, so from a young age I knew I wanted to work in STEM, whether as a helicopter builder, a paramedic or working with robots. It wasn’t until secondary school, though, that engineering came on to my radar.

Through work experience, research and personal projects, I realised I was interested in engineering as it’s where creativity and science meet, so I applied for mechanical engineering programmes. Once I’d completed my degree I discovered the field of fire engineering, which was exciting as the mechanics of fire are fascinating.

I love learning and exploring diverse fields, so fire engineering is ideal for me as there are elements of design, research and analysis, all areas I am interested in.”

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“One of my main aims going into engineering was to help others and the planet, so working in this role for a company like Arcadis, which has so many initiatives and projects that align with this goal, is incredibly exciting.

I also had a friend who worked at Arcadis and recommended their work environment and people-centric projects.”

What was the application process like?

“The application process for Arcadis was surprising as, unlike other application processes, it felt as though Arcadis wanted to set you up to succeed from the start.

There were clear instructions that allowed you to feel prepared and there were friendly faces at every stage to encourage and answer all questions.

I was also interviewed by members of my future team, which gave me a really good insight into my future working environment.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“Throughout my education, I dealt with many challenges with family illnesses and supported them during this time. I was very lucky to have supportive teachers who were understanding and gave me the extra assistance and care I needed to succeed.

I started university during Covid, which was a whole new way of being taught, so to work through all these aspects and to come out the other side with a degree and a job I’m incredibly excited about makes me incredibly grateful.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“My advice would be to take a step back and work out what you want from your future role and company, and tailor your applications to these jobs.

Apply for roles that excite you and make sure your passion comes through in your interview. Find projects at the companies you’re applying to that you’d like to be part of and get curious about them.

Finally, look at company policies and reviews online so you know how you will be treated. This allows you to apply for companies that will treat you well, which is incredibly important!”

What have you learnt from going through the process?

“During the process, I learnt more about the day-to-day operations of the company and met the team I would be working with, which reassured me that Arcadis would be a great fit for me.

I also developed greater confidence in interviews, especially as the team was so friendly.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I’m incredibly excited to start my career in fire engineering. I’m especially looking forward to my three-year graduate programme as I’ll be able to explore the vast opportunities within the sector and work out what I enjoy most and where I best fit.”
