Dalia's success story: Securing an Industrial Placement at Haleon

Created on 30 Sep 2025

Dalia is a Cosmetic Science student from London College of Fashion. She secured a role as a New Product Development Industrial Placement Scientist at Haleon in Surrey, through Bright Network.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I originally chose STEM subjects at A-level with the intention of studying medicine, but I soon realised it wasn’t the right fit for me. I’ve always loved cosmetics and wanted a way to combine creativity with science, which led me to study cosmetic science at university.

The course is incredibly diverse, covering everything from product development and packaging to perfumery and haircare, and I’m passionate about using my knowledge to innovate in a field I’m passionate about.

Going to university felt like the right step for personal growth and independence. I've been able to challenge myself and gain many more life skills."

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“I was motivated to apply for this role because I developed a strong interest in new product development during university and wanted to pursue it further.

Haleon stood out to me not only because it is local, but also because its ethos and values really resonated with me during my research.

The role aligned well with the skills I gained from my course while also offering opportunities to grow in areas I’m less confident in, especially in the lab, making it both exciting and challenging.”

What was the application process like?

“The recruitment journey consisted of three distinct stages: an online assessment, a telephone interview, and, finally, a virtual interview.  During the virtual interview, I met with the Hiring Manager and another member of the team. Although I felt a bit apprehensive at first, both interviewers created a welcoming atmosphere, allowing me plenty of time to respond to their questions. I was sometimes asked additional questions, which I found helpful as it gave me further opportunity to express myself fully.”

How did Bright Network help you secure the role?

“I found the application for the role through Bright Network. The website is super easy to use and I could directly find what I was looking for.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“I’m proud of how I pushed past my nerves and gave my best throughout the journey, especially during the interview process where I stayed positive and focused.

A challenge I faced early on was comparing myself to other placement students and feeling like I had to prove myself. I reminded myself that I earned my place just like they did, and I’m just as capable even if my journey looks different from someone else's.

This really helped to shift my perspective and I was able to feel more confident in myself, which in turn gave me more motivation at work.”

What have you learnt going through the process?

“Participating in an early talent recruitment process is a real lesson in patience, given the multiple stages and the time each can take.  I discovered the importance of maintaining confidence and consistency, even if progress feels slow at times. I also realised that showing authentic enthusiasm for the role can positively influence how you are perceived throughout the process.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“After this year, I’ll be returning to university to complete my degree, bringing everything I’ve learnt so far into the final stretch of my studies.

I’m excited to apply that experience to a future role that’s more focused on cosmetics, especially decorative cosmetics, which really spark my interest.

What I’m most looking forward to is continuing to grow both professionally and personally, building my confidence, expanding my skill set and forming meaningful connections within the industry.”
